COLUMBUS, Ohio: January 29, 2025 – Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC) will host Veterans with disabilities from Cleveland and Columbus for the 26th annual Boundless Hope on the Slopes Veterans Ski Weekend, February 7 – 8, 2025 at Snow Trails in Mansfield, Ohio. This signature skiing and snowboarding event helps our nation’s military heroes recover from their physical and emotional injuries. Serving over 44 counties in Ohio, ASC’s mission is to bring the joy of outdoor recreational and therapeutic sports to Veterans, children, and adults living with a disability.
“Boundless Hope on the Slopes is pure magic, seeing these Veterans enjoy a sense of freedom and regain their power when they are up on the hill,” said Sharon Bucey, ASC President and CEO. “With all that our Veterans have sacrificed for our country, ASC is honored to help them reclaim their independence.”
This adventure-packed weekend includes skiing and snowboarding for Veterans of all abilities and their families. Attendees will take part in adaptive ski lessons, which include tailored equipment fittings. Veterans will also have the opportunity to connect with their peers in the community.
“This is the first time in my 63 years that I actually feel good about myself, because I’m not sick,” said Anthony Guvton, U.S. Army Veteran and ASC athlete. “The past is the past, so I just deal with the future. I’ve decided to deal with it with adaptive sports and just keep moving forward.”
Through ASC’s partnership with the Cleveland and Columbus Veterans Affairs health network, recreational therapists will be on site throughout the event. The team will provide expert care to Veterans dealing with numerous physical and psychological injuries, including PTSD, suicidal thoughts, and chronic pain. Physical activity, such as skiing and snowboarding, is proven to enhance the overall well-being of Veterans. Studies show that physical exertion and movement:
- Reduces the symptoms of PTSD
- Increases determination and inner strength
- Helps with identity and self-concept
- Provides a sense of accomplishment
- Contributes to social well-being
- Enhances motivation for living.
